What is the Difference Between Melamine and Veneer?

Details

When selecting your office furniture, you will often encounter the choice between melamine and veneer surfaces. Misconceptions about these two materials are common. While both melamine and veneer are popular in office furniture, they have distinct characteristics and benefits that are important to understand. Both materials involve applying a thin layer to a core panel, such as MDF, but the key difference lies in the composition of that layer.

Melamine is a synthetic resin-based organic compound that is applied to a core panel. It is arguably the most sustainable option as it is highly durable, resistant to scratches, and has numerous possibilities for hues and patterns. Its patterns are printed, ensuring consistency, and it wraps around the underside of worktops. Veneer, on the other hand, is made from cutting a fine slice of real timber and applying it to a core panel.

Each piece of veneer is unique, reflecting the natural variations in colour and grain from the tree it was cut from. The patterns are natural and may include imperfections like knots. Veneer provides the genuine feel of wood and can be made from hundreds of different wood types, offering more design possibilities than solid wood. However, it is more expensive and delicate than melamine.
Your choice will depend on your desired aesthetic, budget, and intended use. We have moved away from manufacturing in veneer for environmental and practical reasons, as the range of textured laminates now exceeds the performance of veneer.
